Pediatric Cleanings & Exams
Just as with adults, regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential for kids. The AAPD recommends that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday, or within 6 months after the first tooth erupts to ensure their smile gets the healthiest start. During routine visits, our friendly dental team gently cleans your child’s teeth and checks their gums, bite, and overall oral development. When needed, we’ll take x-rays to spot concerns early—before they become bigger problems. These appointments are also a great opportunity to discuss what to expect as your child grows, along with guidance on at-home brushing, flossing, and tooth-friendly food choices to help keep their smile strong and bright.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
When early tooth decay is detected, Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) can be a helpful option—especially for very young children or those who aren’t quite ready for conventional dental treatments. SDF is a quick, painless liquid that’s brushed onto the affected area to slow or stop the progression of decay. It works by killing cavity-causing bacteria and strengthening the remaining tooth structure, much like placing a protective shield over the weakened area.
While SDF is beneficial for managing early decay, it doesn’t replace dental fillings in many cases. Fillings are still needed when a cavity has progressed or when the tooth requires structural support. SDF can sometimes be used as an interim step until a child is ready for traditional treatment.
Reapplication of SDF is often recommended to maintain its effectiveness, and it can be safely used for patients of all ages. Your child’s dentist will help determine whether SDF is appropriate based on the size and location of the cavity and your child’s comfort level during treatment.
Pediatric Digital X-Rays
Digital X-rays are taken only when necessary and are recommended based on your child’s individual cavity risk and how well the spaces between their teeth can be seen during an exam. If interproximal areas can’t be visualized or probed, X-rays help detect early decay that isn't visible to the eye. Digital radiographs use significantly lower radiation than traditional film and provide valuable information beyond checking for cavities—they allow the dentist to evaluate bone levels, monitor tooth development, identify hidden pathology, and ensure your child’s smile is growing the way it should. Your child’s dentist will determine the appropriate frequency based on their needs, growth, and overall oral health.

Pediatric Dental Sealants
Dental sealants help protect the deep grooves, pits, and fissures on the chewing surfaces of kids’ teeth—areas that can easily trap food and bacteria. Newly erupted molars are especially vulnerable because their anatomy makes them harder for children to keep clean, and brushing alone often can’t reach all the way into these tiny grooves.
Sealants create a protective barrier over these surfaces to help prevent cavities from forming. For younger children or those who have difficulty tolerating traditional resin materials, we can use glass ionomer sealants, which are more moisture-tolerant and well-suited for little ones.
Because sealants can wear down over time, it's important to check their integrity at each dental visit. Regular exams every six months allow us to monitor the sealants, touch them up if needed, and keep your child’s smile well protected as they grow.

Pediatric Oral Cancer Screenings
While oral cancer is rare in children, it can still occur—which is why routine screenings are an important part of every comprehensive or periodic dental exam. During this quick, gentle check, our dental team examines your child’s lips, tongue, gums, and oral tissues for anything unusual. Early detection is key to ensuring prompt intervention and the best possible outcome. Most children don’t even notice the screening taking place, but it provides valuable peace of mind and helps us keep your child’s oral health on the right track.
Nutritional Counseling
We believe in a “whole health” approach to caring for your child, and that includes building healthy eating habits. Nutritious, tooth-friendly foods play a huge role in reducing cavity risk and supporting your child’s overall growth and wellbeing. We know that changing eating routines—especially with busy schedules and picky eaters—can be challenging, but even small steps can make a big difference. At each visit, we’re here to help guide you with practical ideas, snack swaps, and mealtime tips that fit your family’s lifestyle. Together, we can create menus that keep your child’s smile strong while also nourishing their body and keeping mealtimes enjoyable for everyone.

Oral Hygiene Habits
Non-nutritive oral habits—such as thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use, tongue thrusting, and even nail biting—are common in childhood, but when they continue for too long, they can affect the way the teeth and jaws develop. These habits can contribute to tooth misalignment, changes in bite (like open bites or crossbites), and even influence facial growth patterns over time.
Our goal is to help parents understand how these habits impact oral development and to support families in gently guiding children toward healthier patterns. If you’re finding it difficult to break an oral habit at home, you’re not alone—we’re here to help with age-appropriate strategies, encouragement, and professional guidance. Together, we can protect your child’s developing smile and promote healthy oral habits that support long-term wellbeing.
Pediatric Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is one of the most effective and well-researched tools we have to prevent tooth decay in children. Its topical effect helps strengthen the enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria. Fluoride also supports the natural remineralization process, allowing early areas of weakened enamel to repair themselves before they turn into cavities. Because of its powerful protective benefits, fluoride is considered the most cost-effective way to reduce dental caries in kids.
After your child’s cleaning, we may apply a fluoride varnish or gel to boost their enamel strength. Our team personalizes our fluoride treatments to match your child's unique dental needs. Fluoride treatment is especially helpful for children with a high risk of cavities, those with special healthcare needs, and patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, since braces and appliances can make cleaning more challenging. When appropriate, we can also prescribe a higher-strength fluoride toothpaste to give your child extra protection at home. Our goal is to tailor fluoride use to your child’s unique needs and help them maintain a strong, healthy smile as they grow.
